Gap Factory Shopping Guide: Encore Rewards, Shipping Costs, Returns and Refunds

Gap Factory is the outlet arm of Gap, selling its own clothing for women, men, girls, boys, toddlers and babies, plus pajamas and gift sets, at prices that are usually already marked down. Sales on the site come thick and fast, and the headline percentage is only part of what you will actually pay. Shipping thresholds, membership tiers, return windows and Final Sale labels all change the real cost of an order. This guide pulls together the rules Gap Factory publishes on its own site so you can plan a purchase, not just react to a banner.

What Gap Factory sells and how it differs from Gap

The site is organized by family member: Women, Men, Girls, Boys, Toddler and Baby, with separate sections for Pajamas, Gifts and Deals & Clearance. Women's shoppers can browse petite and tall sizes, and men have a tall shop as well. Gap Factory sits alongside Gap and Banana Republic Factory in the site header, and the three share an account, but they are separate stores for returns.

That last point matters more than it sounds. Gap Factory's return FAQ says returns and exchanges can only be made at the brand you bought from. An item from Gap Factory cannot go back to a regular Gap store, an Old Navy, an Athleta or a Banana Republic location, and the reverse is also true. If you mix brands in one shopping trip, keep the receipts apart.

Encore rewards: the three tiers

Gap Inc.'s loyalty program is called Encore, and Gap Factory's program page lays out three levels.

• Core is open to everyone and free to join. Members earn 5 points per $1 spent, get free shipping on orders of $50 or more, receive a birthday bonus, and can apply points toward purchases across the company's family of brands or redeem them in the Encore Market.
• Premier is for shoppers who spend $350 or more a year. It adds a "Create Your Own Sale Day," a birthday bonus for you and one family member, and a longer return window.
• All-Access is reserved for holders of a Gap Inc. Credit Card or an Encore credit card. It adds 25 points per $1 spent at the family of brands, 15 points per $1 at other eligible apparel retailers, an extra 20% off your first purchase with a new card, free shipping from $35 and early access to sales.

A few terms are easy to miss. Purchases paid with gift cards or store credit do not earn points. The new-card discount code expires fourteen days after the account opens, the card must be the only payment type, and that discount is not valid in the Clearance Center. Gap Factory also notes that the first-purchase discount cannot be combined with student or employee discounts, though it can be combined with other eligible offers.

Our take: joining Core costs nothing and pays for itself the first time it saves a shipping fee or a return fee. Opening a store card is a bigger decision; only do it if you would pay the balance in full, because the discounts are small next to card interest.

Shipping costs and delivery times

Gap Factory's shipping table is where non-members lose money. Here is how the tiers compare, as listed on the shipping page:

The page lists a single price for Express and Priority, with no member discount shown. Orders below a member's threshold pay $7.50 for Basic or Standard. Express and Priority only reach the continental United States, while Basic and Standard go to all states, P.O. boxes, APO and FPO addresses and US territories, with up to 14 business days for the last three. Express and Priority orders placed before 3pm ET on a weekday arrive faster than those placed later or on weekends.

Two more rules are worth knowing. If an order ships in several boxes, you pay shipping only once. And one order can only go to one address, so gifts for different households need separate orders, each with its own shipping charge. The site suggests using "Save for later" to split a bag into several orders.

Returns, exchanges and the holiday window

The standard window is 30 days from delivery for online orders, or from the purchase date for in-store buys. Items must be unwashed and unworn. Damaged or defective items can be returned at any time.

Holiday shoppers get more room. Under the extended holiday policy, anything bought online or in stores between October 15 and December 24 can be returned through January 15 of the following year, or within 30 days of delivery or purchase, whichever is later. Proof of purchase is required, and items shipped and sold by third-party sellers are excluded.

Membership stretches the window further. Premier members who were signed in, or gave their phone number in store, can return within 45 days; All-Access cardmembers get 60 days. Returns made after day 30 are refunded on a Merchandise Return Card rather than to your original payment.

Return shipping by mail is free for Encore members, while non-members pay a $6 fee. Exchanges are free. You can bring online orders to a Gap Factory store, except items marked "mail only," third-party seller items, and orders placed through outside marketplaces such as TikTok Shop or DoorDash, which must go back through that marketplace. In-store purchases cannot be returned by mail.

What you cannot return

Gap Factory is strict about a few categories:

• Final Sale items cannot be returned or exchanged, by mail or in a store.
• Encore Market purchases are final sale too.
• Masks are final sale.
• Swimwear needs its original tags and hygienic liner, and maternity items are mail-only returns.
• Sunglasses can come back within 30 days with the receipt and tags attached, unless they are defective.

During deep sales, check every product page for a Final Sale label before you add it to your bag. It is the single most common way a "cheap" purchase turns into money you cannot get back.

How refunds are paid

Most refunds go back to the original payment method, including PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna and Afterpay. Gift card purchases are refunded to a new gift card, and items bought with points are credited back as points within a day or two. If you split a payment between a gift card and a credit card, the gift card is refunded first. Card refunds can take up to 10 more business days to appear on your statement.

Discounts do not carry over freely. If you used a promo code and want a different style rather than another size or color, the discount does not transfer. Gifts returned with a gift receipt get a gift card for the purchase price; without one, you get a merchandise certificate for the current selling price, which may be lower after a sale.

A checklist for your next Gap Factory sale

1. Sign in or join Core first. It unlocks free Basic shipping from $50 and free return shipping.
2. Read the banner terms. Gap Factory often runs a sitewide percentage, an extra discount at checkout and a separate cardmember code at the same time. Note which one applies to you and whether exclusions are listed.
3. Check for Final Sale labels on clearance items before paying.
4. Group gifts by address, because each address needs its own order and shipping charge.
5. Keep the confirmation email. It is your proof of purchase for refunds, and it lists the shipping charge and expected delivery date.
6. Use the holiday window for gifts bought between October 15 and December 24, and note the January 15 cutoff.
7. Return to the right brand. Gap Factory items go back to Gap Factory, not Gap or Old Navy.

The bottom line

Gap Factory's prices are low before any sale starts, so the real savings come from avoiding the extras: shipping under the threshold, return fees as a non-member and Final Sale items you cannot send back.
