The Home Depot
US home improvement retailer selling tools, building materials, appliances and garden supplies online and in stores.
What this guide covers
The Home Depot sells power tools, batteries, building supplies, appliances and garden gear online and through its stores across the United States. Its prices move often, especially on tool bundles, and the sticker price is only one part of what an order really costs you. Return windows differ by product type, price matching has firm exclusions, and delivery can be free, quick or surprisingly expensive depending on what you buy and where you live.

This guide collects the rules The Home Depot publishes on its own website, so you can plan a purchase with the full picture rather than react to a red price tag. Everything below comes from homedepot.com pages we read on October 31, 2026. The retailer can change any of these terms, so treat the specifics as a snapshot and confirm them before you pay.
Returns: the windows that matter
The headline rule is generous. Most new, unused items can be returned within 90 days of purchase with proof of purchase, and the tool listings we checked spell this out on the product page as a 90-day return. But several categories have much shorter windows, and two of them changed in 2026:
- 90 days: most merchandise, including the power tool kits we cover in our deal reports.
- 30 days: furniture, consumer electronics and gas-powered outdoor equipment. Since July 7, 2026, Halloween and holiday decor also falls into the 30-day group.
- 7 days: dehumidifiers, gas pressure washers, air conditioners and gas generators. Since July 7, 2026, pumps, portable evaporative coolers and portable heaters also have a 7-day window.
- 48 hours: major appliances, counted from delivery. The Home Depot asks you to call its appliance line at 1-800-455-3869 to start these returns.
- 365 days: purchases made with The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, the Pro Xtra Credit Card or a Commercial Account.
Some items cannot be returned at all, including gift cards, tinted paint and custom-made products. Special-order items may carry a 15% restocking fee if you send them back, so think carefully before ordering anything built or cut to your measurements.
How to send something back
Online orders can be returned at any Home Depot store at no cost, which is usually the fastest route because the store can inspect the item and start the refund on the spot. If there is no store nearby, you can print a prepaid UPS label and drop the package at a UPS Access Point.
Refunds are not instant. The Home Depot says it processes a refund in about 7 business days, and your bank may take up to 10 more business days to show it. Original shipping charges are only refunded when the return is caused by a Home Depot error, such as a wrong or damaged item. If you return something without a receipt, you will get store credit at the item's lowest advertised price rather than a refund to your card.
For large deliveries, the delivery page adds one more rule worth remembering: inspect items when they arrive, note any visible damage on the delivery receipt, and refuse the shipment if needed. If you only notice a problem after accepting it, you fall back on the normal return policy.
Price match and price adjustments

The Home Depot will match a lower price on an identical item, meaning the same brand, model, size and finish, when the competitor has it in stock and can sell and ship it to your location. For online orders it matches prices from Lowe's, Menards, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target, but only when the item is sold and fulfilled by that retailer rather than a third-party marketplace seller. It does not match auction, marketplace or membership sites such as eBay, Wayfair, Costco or Sam's Club. Local stores near you can also count.
To request a match on homedepot.com, contact Customer Solutions by live chat or at 1-800-430-3376 before you order, with the Internet number or SKU from homedepot.com, the competitor's name and the competitor's own product number. In a store, show the cashier an ad, printout or link with the lower price.
The exclusions are where most requests fail. The Home Depot does not match:
- special-order or custom items;
- clearance and closeout items;
- prices from third-party sellers or auction sites;
- prices offered during Black Friday or other limited-time promotions, including flash sales;
- bulk discounts and contractor pricing;
- shipping, delivery or installation costs.
You also cannot combine a price match with a coupon or promo code, so pick whichever saves more. And the retailer notes that some products are priced differently online and in stores on purpose; it will not match those differences between its own channels.
If the price drops after you buy, you can ask for a price adjustment within 30 days of purchase, in a store or through customer service for online orders, with your order number or receipt and proof of the lower price. Clearance items, special orders and products bought during promotional events are excluded, which matters for holiday tool deals: a later markdown on an item you bought during a promotion may not be refunded.
Delivery and pickup options
The Home Depot offers several delivery speeds, and the cost depends on order size, order total, item dimensions, delivery method and your location:
- Standard delivery is free on over 2 million items. Many orders arrive within same day to 2 days, while large or heavy orders often take 3 to 5 days.
- 2-hour Express Delivery is available on select in-stock items ordered by 4 p.m. local time. It is subject to availability and fees, and it excludes aerosols, custom mixed paint and bulk orders. If the store misses your scheduled window by more than 15 minutes, The Home Depot says it refunds the Express Delivery fee.
- Same-day delivery covers select items ordered by 4 p.m., and tens of thousands of qualifying orders get it free. Next-day delivery is also available for many items, depending on ZIP code.
- Scheduled delivery lets you choose the day for big and bulky orders, with live tracking on select orders.
- Oversized or heavy items have more varied fees, from free to $55 or $79.
If you would rather skip delivery fees, choose store pickup at checkout. The Home Depot says pickup orders can be ready in as soon as 2 hours, and curbside pickup is available through The Home Depot app. The US site does not ship to Canada or Mexico; those countries have their own Home Depot websites.
Reading a Home Depot tool deal
Tool deals at The Home Depot are often bundles: a battery kit with a free bare tool, or a bare tool with a battery starter kit for a limited time. Two listings we checked on October 31, 2026 show how to read them.
The RYOBI ONE+ 18V kit (Internet # 341965772) pairs a 4.0Ah battery, a 2.0Ah battery and a charger with a free ONE+ dual-function inflator/deflator, listed at $99.00 against $168.97. The free tool is a bare tool, so the batteries in the kit are what make it work. The DEWALT ATOMIC 20V MAX 1/2 in. impact wrench kit (Internet # 322363990) adds a 6.0Ah and 4.0Ah starter kit to the wrench, listed at $199.00 against $438.00.
A few habits help with any bundle like these:
- Read the "Includes" line and the specification table, not just the headline. On the DEWALT listing, the headline mentions a bag, while DEWALT's answer in the product Q&A says the battery kit does not include one.
- Check the battery platform. RYOBI ONE+ 18V batteries work with any ONE+ 18V tool; DEWALT says the charger in its DCB2460C kit charges its 12V and 20V MAX batteries.
- Look for order limits. Both listings above cap buyers at 3 per order.
- Compare against the retailer's own listings. The compare table on a Home Depot product page often shows the same tool in other bundles, which is the quickest way to judge whether a deal is really cheaper.
- Note the warranty. The RYOBI kit lists a 3-year manufacturer's warranty; the DEWALT kit lists a 3-year limited warranty, a 1-year free service contract and a 90-day money back guarantee.
Getting help
The Home Depot lists several ways to reach customer service. You can text SUPPORT to 38698 at any hour, or use the Magic Apron virtual assistant on the website to reach a live associate. By phone, call 1-800-430-3376 for online orders, 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (1-800-466-3337) for in-store purchases and 1-800-455-3869 for major appliances. Phone lines are open 7 days a week from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Eastern time.
A quick checklist before you check out
- Confirm the return window for the product type, especially for heaters, generators, electronics and appliances.
- Avoid special orders unless you are sure, because of the possible 15% restocking fee.
- Ask for a price match before you order if an approved competitor sells the identical item for less, and remember promotions and clearance prices do not count.
- Keep your receipt or order number for the 30-day price adjustment window and for full refunds instead of store credit.
- Compare pickup and delivery for bulky items, where fees can reach $55 or $79.
- Inspect deliveries on arrival and note any damage on the delivery receipt.
The bottom line
The Home Depot's 90-day return window and broad price match policy make it a low-risk place to buy tools, but the fine print matters: shorter windows for seasonal and gas-powered gear, no price matching on promotional prices and delivery fees on bulky items. Check those three things and the advertised saving gets much closer to what you actually pay. For current offers, see our reports on the RYOBI ONE+ 18V kit with a free inflator at $99 and the DEWALT ATOMIC impact wrench kit at $199.
