A bit driver socket set looks like a small, unglamorous box of parts, but it fills a gap many home toolkits have. A screwdriver set handles screws you can reach and turn by hand. A socket set handles nuts and bolt heads. Bit driver sockets sit in between: they are screwdriver tips (hex, Torx, Phillips or slotted) fixed into a socket, so you can turn a screw with a ratchet and apply far more torque than your wrist could manage. This guide explains what is in a typical set, which drive size you need, what materials and markings to look for, and how to decide whether a set like the Kobalt 37-piece set on sale at Lowe's fits the tools you already own.

What a bit driver socket actually does

A bit socket has a square drive hole on one end that fits a ratchet, extension or torque wrench, and a fixed bit on the other end. Because a ratchet handle is longer than a screwdriver handle, you get more leverage. That matters for three common situations:

  • Stuck or seized fasteners, such as a rusted hex bolt on a lawn mower deck or a Torx screw holding a brake caliper bracket on a car.
  • Fasteners that need a set torque, where you combine the bit socket with a torque wrench.
  • Awkward angles, where a ratchet with an extension can reach a recessed screw that a straight screwdriver cannot.

Unlike a loose screwdriver bit in a magnetic holder, the bit in a bit socket is usually pressed or locked into the socket, so it is less likely to fall out when you are working upside down.

Know the four bit shapes

Most bit driver socket sets mix several head types. Here is what each one is for:

  • Hex (Allen): a six-sided bit. Hex socket-head screws show up in furniture, bicycles, machinery and engines. Sets often include both inch (SAE) and metric sizes, and they are not interchangeable: using a nearly matching size will round the screw.
  • Torx (star): a six-lobed star bit. Torx screws are common in cars, appliances, electronics and outdoor power equipment because the shape resists cam-out, the slipping that strips Phillips heads.
  • Phillips: the familiar cross shape. Phillips bits in a socket set help with stubborn household screws, but the shape tends to cam out under high torque, so push firmly and turn slowly.
  • Slotted (flathead): a straight blade, still found on older hardware, electrical covers and some appliances.

Some sets also include external Torx sockets, sometimes called E-Torx. These are the reverse of a Torx bit: a socket with a star-shaped opening that fits over a star-shaped bolt head. They are widely used on modern cars, so if you work on vehicles, a set that includes them saves an extra purchase.

Drive size: 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch

The drive size is the square hole that connects the socket to your ratchet. For bit sockets, two sizes cover almost all home use:

  • 1/4-inch drive sockets are small and light. They suit small fasteners and tight spaces, and they make it harder to overtighten a small screw.
  • 3/8-inch drive sockets are the all-rounder size for car and home repair, with more strength for larger hex and Torx bits.

A mixed-drive set includes both, which is convenient if you own a ratchet in each size. If you own only one ratchet, check the set's component list carefully, or plan to use an adapter. Adapters work, but they add length and a little wobble.

Materials, finish and markings

Most consumer bit socket sets are made from chrome vanadium steel, a common tool alloy that balances strength and toughness. Higher-stress impact-rated sockets are usually made from chrome molybdenum steel and have a black finish; standard chrome sockets are not meant for impact wrenches. If you plan to use an impact driver or impact wrench, buy sockets that are specifically labeled as impact-rated.

Markings matter more than they seem. Size markings that are stamped into the metal last much longer than painted or printed markings, which wear off. A case that holds each socket in a labeled slot, ideally with a clear lid, makes it easy to see which piece is missing before you put the set away.

Some products are described as meeting ANSI specifications, the American National Standards Institute standards that cover dimensions and strength for hand tools. It is a useful sign that a set is built to a recognized standard.

A worked example: the Kobalt 37-piece set

Here is how those features look on a real product. Lowe's product page for the Kobalt 37-piece flathead, hex, Phillips and Torx bit driver socket set describes it as follows:

  • a compact, mixed-drive set with 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch drive bit driver sockets plus external star sockets;
  • 37 pieces across hex, Phillips, slotted, Torx and external Torx bit driver sockets, with a full component list in the page's dimensions guide;
  • chrome vanadium steel, heat treated for strength and durability;
  • hard-stamped size markings;
  • a clear-lid case measuring 2.15 inches high by 4.78 inches wide by 8.62 inches deep, small enough for most toolboxes and kitchen drawers;
  • meets or exceeds ANSI specifications;
  • covered by Kobalt's lifetime guarantee.

On October 30, 2026, Lowe's listed it at $24.98, down from $34.98. Prices can change, so check the news story for the details we confirmed and the current listing before you buy.

Who needs a set, and who can skip it

Good fit:

  • You own a ratchet, or plan to buy one, and keep running into Torx or hex screws that your screwdriver set cannot budge.
  • You do basic car maintenance; external Torx and larger Torx bits come up often on modern vehicles.
  • You assemble flat-pack furniture or bikes and want more control than a hex key gives you.

Probably skip:

  • You already own a large impact-driver bit set and do most work with a power tool. A bit socket set will mostly duplicate it.
  • You need impact-rated sockets for an impact wrench. Buy an impact-rated set instead.
  • You only need one or two specific sizes. Buying individual bit sockets may cost less.

How to use bit sockets without stripping screws

  1. Match the bit exactly. Try the size up and down until you find the one with no play.
  2. Seat it fully. Push the bit all the way into the fastener head before you turn.
  3. Keep it straight. Line up the ratchet and extension with the screw so the bit does not tilt and cam out.
  4. Break it loose by hand. Use the ratchet to crack a stuck fastener, then switch to a screwdriver or spinner if you want speed.
  5. Respect torque specs. For car parts, use a torque wrench where the manual gives a value.
  6. Put each piece back. A missing bit is usually the one you need next.

Warranty and returns

Lowe's product page says this set is covered by Kobalt's lifetime guarantee; check the guarantee terms on Lowe's site before relying on it. Lowe's own return rules, including the standard 90-day window for most items and how receipts and MyLowe's Rewards purchase history help with returns, are covered in our Lowe's returns and MyLowe's Rewards guide.
