Lowe's Return Policy and MyLowe's Rewards: A Practical Guide

If you shop at Lowe's a few times a year, two policies decide how much a purchase really costs you: how long you have to change your mind, and what you earn back. Lowe's publishes both on its own site, and the details are more specific than most shoppers expect. A paint sprayer and a box of screws do not share the same return window, and the free MyLowe's Rewards program pays out in a particular way. This guide walks through the rules as Lowe's states them, with practical advice on using them without surprises.

The return windows, by category

Lowe's does not have a single return period. Its returns page sorts merchandise into four windows.

48 hours. Major appliances (refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, ranges, hoods, dishwashers, over-the-range microwaves, cooktops, wall ovens and washer and dryer pedestals), portable and window air conditioners, evaporative coolers, paint sprayers, tile saws, construction heat and parts, and utility vehicles, golf carts, go-karts and motorized bikes. Gas-powered portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws also sit in this group. The clock starts at delivery or at pickup. There is a useful exception: many of these items can still go back within 30 days if they are in original, unopened, undamaged, factory-sealed packaging.

30 days. Liquid paint, TVs and electronics, water heaters, HVAC systems, most outdoor power equipment (mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers, snow blowers, tillers and similar), custom blinds and window treatments made to your measurements, house and patio plants and annuals, and most items sold by third-party marketplace sellers. CRAFTSMAN battery and electric outdoor power equipment is the exception within this group, with a 90-day window.

90 days. Most new, unused merchandise. This is the window that covers the bulk of what people buy: hand tools, hardware, fixtures, storage, small home goods.

365 days. Trees, shrubs and perennials, and purchases made with a Lowe's Commercial Account, a MyLowe's Pro Rewards credit card, a MyLowe's Rewards credit card or Lowe's Business Rewards.

The practical takeaway: before you buy anything with a motor or a compressor, check which window it falls into. Opening the box of a pressure washer to "have a look" can turn a 30-day option into a 48-hour one.

What you need to make a return

Lowe's says it does not accept returns or exchanges without valid proof of purchase. That sounds strict, but the definition is broad. Staff can try to find your purchase from a physical or electronic receipt, an order number, the payment card or digital wallet you used, your phone number, or your MyLowe's Rewards or Pro Rewards account. Lowe's also uses refund verification systems that may ask for a government photo ID.

This is one of the quieter benefits of being a MyLowe's Rewards member: if your purchases are attached to your account, you rarely need to keep paper receipts.

You can start a return from your order history online, take items to any US Lowe's store, or mail back an online purchase when a FedEx label is provided. Large items, such as appliances, can be returned to a store, or you can call customer care at 1-800-445-6937 to ask whether home pickup is available.

How you get your money back

Refunds generally go back to the original payment method, with exceptions Lowe's spells out:

• Gift cards, merchandise cards and store credit are refunded as in-store credit.
• Lowe's Pay purchases are refunded to the financing provider, which handles the refund with you.
• MyLowe's Money goes back to your digital wallet as MyLowe's Money.
• Cash or check refunds over $1,000 may be sent by mail as a check, at Lowe's discretion. Check purchases returned within three days are refunded as store credit.

Lowe's says to allow up to seven business days for a card refund to appear, depending on your bank.

Items you cannot return

Some things are final sale. Lowe's lists labor, installation and delivery charges (unless the error was Lowe's), gift cards of any kind, safety masks, highway trailers, whole-house generators, as-is merchandise, paint samples and trading cards among non-refundable items. Christmas and Halloween items must be returned on or before the holiday itself, and holiday items bought after the holiday cannot be returned. Special-order configured products returned or canceled more than 72 hours after purchase carry a 20% restocking fee and must go back to the store where you bought them.

Lowe's Outlet locations follow different rules: sales are final except for major appliances with a mechanical or electrical defect that makes them non-functional, reported within 48 hours. Outlet purchases go back only to the same Outlet.

Price drops after you buy

Lowe's has a route for this. If you find a lower price after purchase, the returns page says to contact Lowe's through chat or at 1-877-465-6937 so it can review whether the request qualifies for an adjustment. Its Lowest Price Guarantee compares the item price plus shipping or delivery, and the competitor must be able to ship the item to you. Only the original buyer can make the request.

This matters during sale season. When we covered the Kobalt 37-piece bit driver socket set at $24.98, the listed regular price was $34.98. Had you bought it at full price shortly before, asking for a review would have been worth a short chat.

How MyLowe's Rewards works

MyLowe's Rewards is a free loyalty program for DIY shoppers; you do not need a Lowe's credit card to join. You sign in online before checkout, or in stores scan the member ID in the Lowe's app wallet or give your phone number.

The mechanics, according to Lowe's:

• Points on eligible purchases. Points are awarded once orders are settled and fulfilled. There are also "point boosters" and other activities that can earn extra points.
• $5 at a time. When you reach 500 points, $5 in MyLowe's Money lands in your account wallet.
• Expiry. Points expire 12 months after your last points-earning activity, so regular shoppers effectively keep them.
• Status levels. The program has tiers based on your spend on eligible purchases during a program period. Lowe's Advantage Card holders who save the card to their Lowes.com wallet, and digitally verified members of the Military Discount Program, are upgraded to Silver status.
• Member gifts. Members periodically receive free gifts.
• Forgot to scan? You can upload an in-store receipt through Purchase History to claim the points. Guest online orders cannot be added later.

MyLowe's Money has rules worth knowing before you count on it. It cannot be used on gift cards, credit card payments, Lowe's-branded sites run by third parties, or Weber, Kichler or Miele products. You can use up to five per transaction, and it is applied after discounts, coupons, taxes and fees. If you return something you bought partly with MyLowe's Money, the refund goes to your other payment method first and the rest comes back as MyLowe's Money.

Credit cards and the extended window

The 365-day return window for Lowe's credit card purchases is a real perk if you take on big projects that change as they go. Lowe's Advantage Card holders also keep their 5% off eligible purchases, though Lowe's notes the 5% cannot be combined with other discounts, and the card is subject to credit approval. Weigh that against the interest you would pay if you carry a balance; a return window is no bargain if the card costs more than the project.

A simple checklist for your next trip

1. Sign in or scan your member ID every time, so points accrue and your purchase history doubles as a receipt.
2. Check the return window before opening anything with an engine or compressor.
3. Keep packaging for 48-hour items until you are sure.
4. Watch prices on big purchases for a couple of weeks and ask about an adjustment if they drop.
5. Spend MyLowe's Money within its redemption window, and remember the brand exclusions.
