Heating season dries indoor air, and a humidifier is the simplest way to put some moisture back. The harder part is picking the right type. Ultrasonic, evaporative and warm mist models behave differently, need different upkeep and carry different trade-offs for the air you breathe. This guide explains those differences using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's guidance on home humidifiers, then shows how they map onto a real product lineup, using Dreo's humidifiers as listed on dreo.com on October 31, 2026. It is a research-based guide; it does not rely on any testing of our own.

Why humidity matters, and why more is not better

The EPA notes that people use humidifiers to relieve dry noses, throats, lips and skin, and that added moisture can reduce winter nuisances such as static electricity and cracking paint or furniture. It also warns that too much moisture encourages dust mites and mold. Its recommendation is to keep indoor relative humidity at or below 50%, to check it with a hygrometer and to turn the humidifier down or move it if water starts to condense on windows, walls or pictures.

That sets the goal for any purchase: a unit that can hold your room in a comfortable range without overshooting, and one you will realistically keep clean.

The four main types

The EPA groups home humidifiers into four types.

Ultrasonic

Ultrasonic humidifiers create a cool mist using high-frequency vibrations. In Dreo's catalog, for example, they include the lowest-priced models. The EPA says ultrasonic and impeller models are the two types that generally disperse the most microorganisms and minerals from their tanks into the air. With hard tap water, those minerals can settle as fine white dust.

Impeller ("cool mist")

Impeller humidifiers spin a disk at high speed to throw out a cool mist. The EPA groups them with ultrasonic models as the types most likely to disperse microorganisms and minerals.

Evaporative

Evaporative humidifiers use a fan to blow air through a wet wick, belt or filter, releasing moisture invisibly. The EPA says they generally disperse less, if any, of those pollutants, and are not expected to release substantial amounts of minerals. The trade-off is the wick, which collects minerals and needs regular washing and replacement.

Steam vaporizer and warm mist

Steam vaporizers heat water with an element to create steam; warm mist models cool the steam slightly before it leaves the unit. The EPA says they are not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals, but warns that steam and hot water can cause burns, so these should be kept out of reach of children.

Quick comparison

Type How it adds moisture Mineral dust risk (EPA) Main trade-off
Ultrasonic Vibration creates cool mist Higher Needs low-mineral water and frequent cleaning
Impeller Spinning disk throws cool mist Higher Same as ultrasonic
Evaporative Fan blows air through a wet wick Low Wick washing and replacement
Steam / warm mist Heats water into steam Low Burn risk around children

How these types look in one real lineup

Dreo sells all of the common types, which makes its catalog a useful way to see the options side by side. Prices and specifications below are as listed on dreo.com on October 31, 2026, and are the manufacturer's own claims.

  • Small ultrasonic (bedrooms, desks): the 306 (3 L, listed for up to 300 sq ft) from $39.99, the 311 and 311S (4 L) at $39.99 and $54.99, and the 321 (4 L) at $44.99.
  • Mid-size ultrasonic: the 524 and 524S (6 L, up to 60 hours) at $59.99 and $69.99.
  • Large ultrasonic: the 735S (11 L, listed for up to 700 sq ft and 100 hours) at $139.99, the top-fill 747S (11 L, 700 sq ft, 100 hours) at $119.99 and the 755S with a 16 L tank at $169.99.
  • Warm and cool hybrids: the 713S (6 L) at $89.99, the 813S (6 L) at $99.99 and the 717S (8 L, up to 80 hours) at $119.99.
  • Evaporative: the 774S (10 L, up to 50 hours, listed for up to 1,000 sq ft) at $159.99.

Two details stand out. First, Dreo sells demineralization and scale-inhibitor cartridges for many of its ultrasonic and hybrid models, which is the manufacturer's own acknowledgment that minerals are a factor with mist-based units. Second, the only evaporative model in the lineup is also among the more expensive, which is common: you pay more upfront to avoid mineral dust. For a detailed look at that model, read our Dreo 774S review.

Choosing by room and routine

Small bedroom or nursery. A small ultrasonic or warm mist unit is usually enough. If you choose ultrasonic, plan on distilled or demineralized water. If you choose warm mist, place it well out of a child's reach because of the burn risk the EPA notes.

Living room or open-plan space. Look at tank size and the manufacturer's coverage figure together. A larger tank means fewer refills, but coverage claims are made under the maker's own conditions, so treat them as an upper limit.

Hard tap water. If you see white dust on furniture now, or your area has hard water, an evaporative or steam model avoids most of the mineral problem. Otherwise, budget for distilled water or cartridges.

Low-maintenance priority. No type is maintenance-free. Evaporative units shift the work to the wick; ultrasonic units need frequent tank cleaning and better water. Pick the chore you are more likely to keep up with.

Smart controls. An auto mode with a built-in humidity sensor helps hold a target, which matters because the EPA's ceiling is 50%. Still, a separate hygrometer is a cheap way to check the reading.

Care routine: what the EPA recommends

Whatever you buy, the EPA's care guidance is the baseline:

  1. Unplug first. Always unplug the unit before emptying or cleaning it.
  2. Empty and refill daily. Empty the tank, wipe surfaces dry and refill with fresh water every day instead of topping up.
  3. Use low-mineral water. This reduces scale and the minerals released into the air.
  4. Clean every third day. Scrub off scale, deposits and film, then dry the surfaces.
  5. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. If there are none, the EPA suggests a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution on surfaces that touch water, followed by several rinses.
  6. Keep the area dry. Do not let carpets, drapes or tablecloths near the unit become damp; turn the output down if they do.
  7. Store it dry. At the end of the season, clean the unit, discard used cartridges or filters and store it completely dry.

The EPA also advises stopping use and contacting a doctor if you develop respiratory symptoms you believe are linked to using a humidifier, even if you follow the cleaning directions.

Where to buy and what to check

Dreo sells directly on its website. Before paying, check the replacement filter or cartridge price as well as the unit price, since those are ongoing costs. Our Dreo buying guide covers Dreo's warranty, shipping and recall history, including the October 2026 recall of its DR-HSH015 space heater.
