Key facts
- Minimum depth
- the Mini needs 2.36 inches of meat to read correctly, versus 3.15 inches for RFX MEAT.
- Sensors
- four sensors in each probe; the app shows the lowest reading by default, with an advanced mode that shows all four.
- Heat rating
- the exposed end of both probes is rated to 1,000°F.
- Range
- up to 1,500 feet line of sight to the RFX gateway, or up to 560 feet through walls, ovens and smoker steel, per ThermoWorks.
- Connection
- probes talk to the gateway over a sub-GHz radio; the gateway connects to the app over Wi-Fi, or straight to a phone over Bluetooth. One gateway handles more than 50 probes.
- Price (valid as of October 30, 2026, 14:07 UTC+8)
- RFX MEAT Mini $79.20 (was $99.00) during a ThermoWorks sitewide 20% sale; the RFX GATEWAY is $71.20 (was $89.00).
ThermoWorks has added a smaller probe to its RFX wireless thermometer system. The new RFX MEAT Mini, reported by Engadget on October 29, 2026, is built for thinner cuts such as chops, filets, burgers and fish, where the original RFX MEAT probe is too long to sit fully in the meat. It uses the same RFX gateway and ThermoWorks app, so existing RFX owners can simply add it.

RFX MEAT vs RFX MEAT Mini
Both charge in a block powered by a single AAA battery that ThermoWorks rates for 175+ full charges.

Our take
The Mini fixes the most common complaint about long wireless probes: on a one-inch steak or a pork chop, part of the sensing tip ends up outside the meat or the probe has to go in at an awkward angle. A shorter minimum insertion depth means the four sensors actually sit in the cut, which is what makes the "coldest spot" reading useful.
What you give up is battery, roughly 48 hours versus 65 or more, which only matters for very long smokes. Those are exactly the cooks where the full-size probe is the better fit anyway. So the sensible setup is a mix: full-size probes for brisket, pork butt and turkey, and one or two Minis for weeknight grilling.
Who should buy it: existing RFX owners who grill smaller cuts, and new buyers who mostly cook steaks, chops and fish. Who can skip it: people who mainly smoke large cuts, where the original RFX MEAT already fits. Note that the Mini still needs the RFX gateway, so a first-time buyer should price the gateway in too.
The pricing above is from ThermoWorks' sitewide sale, which carries "some restrictions" and no listed end date, so check the price at checkout. Our RFX MEAT vs RFX MEAT Mini guide covers which combination suits different cooks.
