Bodum USA is recalling about 5.9 million French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes because the glass can shatter during use and scald the person pouring. You probably do not need to throw yours away: the fix is to stop stirring with metal spoons and to request a free plastic stirring spoon and warning label from Bodum.

How to check yours

Look for the Bodum name on the frame and the inner lid, and on the glass itself, where it is engraved along with the warnings. If you own an 8-cup or 12-cup glass-carafe model from the list above, it is covered. The recall site at bodumfrenchpressrecall.expertinquiry.com has photos and model details if you are unsure. Because sales stretch back 52 years, many hand-me-down and thrift-store presses are included too.

What to do

  1. Stop using metal spoons or utensils in the glass carafe, starting with your next brew.
  2. Inspect the glass. Do not use a carafe with any chip, crack or scratch; replace the carafe or the press.
  3. Request the free kit at bodumfrenchpressrecall.expertinquiry.com, through "Recall Information" on bodum.com, by calling 888-879-8213 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday) or by emailing Bodum3302@sedgwick.com.
  4. Stick the warning label somewhere you will see it, and use the plastic spoon from then on.
