New Era
Buffalo, New York headwear maker founded in 1920 and the official on-field cap of Major League Baseball.
Our verdict
Based on New Era's official specs, the 59FIFTY ($49.99 to $61.99 on neweracap.com on November 5, 2026) is the brand's flagship true-fitted cap with a structured front, full crown and flat visor in sizes 6 7/8 to 8, best for buyers who know their exact hat size and want the classic tall crown rather than an adjustable fit.
The New Era 59FIFTY is the cap most people picture when they hear "fitted hat": a tall, structured crown, a flat visor and no strap in the back. New Era calls it "the originator of the true fitted" and its flagship style. This review looks at what the 59FIFTY actually is, how its sizing works, what it costs on New Era's own store and when another New Era silhouette is the better buy.
This is a research-based review. It draws on New Era's silhouette guide, product pages, size chart and company history, checked on November 5, 2026. We have not wear-tested the cap, so you won't find comfort claims here that New Era doesn't make itself.

The short version
The 59FIFTY is New Era's flagship fitted cap. It comes in exact hat sizes from 6 7/8 to 8, and on November 5, 2026 it cost $49.99 to $61.99 on neweracap.com. It suits buyers who know their head size and want the classic tall-crown look. If you want something lower, softer or adjustable, New Era makes four 59FIFTY variants and several adjustable or stretch-fit lines.
Where the 59FIFTY comes from
New Era's history page dates the style to 1954, when Harold Koch, son of founder Ehrhardt Koch, designed the fitted 59FIFTY "giving it a more contemporary look." By then, New Era says, it was the only independent cap maker supplying big league baseball teams.
The cap's link to baseball has grown since then. New Era says it became the exclusive supplier of on-field caps for Major League Baseball in 1993. It became the official sideline cap of the NFL in 2012 and the official on-court cap of the NBA in 2016. That is why the 59FIFTY collection on neweracap.com is mostly licensed team caps. Of the 250 59FIFTY products we checked in the collection feed, 129 carried NBA licensing and 73 carried MLB licensing.
Design: what makes it a 59FIFTY
New Era's silhouette guide lists five defining features:
| Feature | New Era's description |
|---|---|
| True Fitted | Closed back style available in true fitting size |
| Structured Cap | Front panel structure for stability and classic cap shape |
| Flat Visor | Designed to be flat, but can curve as desired |
| Full Crown | Tall and broad profile of the original fitted cap |
| Elite Material | The fabric worn by the pros featuring engineered performance material |
The practical result is a cap that holds its shape on the shelf and on your head. The structured front panel keeps logos upright and visible, which is part of why teams use it. The flat visor can be curved by hand if you prefer, so the brim isn't a deal-breaker.

The full crown is the feature that divides opinion. It sits taller and broader than most everyday dad hats or curved-brim caps. New Era clearly knows this, because it now sells a lower 59FIFTY variant for people who want the fitted size without the height.
Sizing: how to get it right
A fitted cap has no strap, so the size has to be right before you buy. The 59FIFTY uses New Era's fitted size chart:
| Cap size | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| 6 7/8 | 21 5/8 | 54.9 |
| 7 | 22 | 55.8 |
| 7 1/8 | 22 3/8 | 56.8 |
| 7 1/4 | 22 3/4 | 57.7 |
| 7 3/8 | 23 1/8 | 58.7 |
| 7 1/2 | 23 1/2 | 59.6 |
| 7 5/8 | 23 7/8 | 60.6 |
| 7 3/4 | 24 1/4 | 61.5 |
| 7 7/8 | 24 5/8 | 62.5 |
| 8 | 25 | 63.5 |
New Era's measuring instructions:
- Place a flexible tape measure in the middle of your forehead.
- Wrap it around your head about half an inch above your eyebrows and ears.
- Keep the tape straight and snug, but not too tight, where the sweatband will rest.
- Convert the measurement with the chart.
If you are between sizes, New Era recommends rounding up. No tape measure? New Era suggests using a piece of string and measuring it with a ruler.
Availability across the size range is broad. In the collection feed we checked, all 250 59FIFTY products listed sizes 7 through 8 (one skipped 7 7/8), and one also offered 6 7/8 and 8 1/8.

Price on neweracap.com
We checked the variant prices of 250 products in New Era's 59FIFTY collection on November 5, 2026. The range was $49.99 to $61.99. Most were $52.99 or $55.99. Collaboration caps, such as the NBA x Scooby-Doo designs, were at the top of the range at $61.99. The New York Yankees Authentic Collection 59FIFTY was $49.99.
New Era's site advertised free standard shipping on orders over $100 at the time, so two fitted caps usually clear that threshold.

The Yankees cap is a good example of a standard team 59FIFTY. New Era describes it as a team-color cap with an embroidered Yankees logo on the front and an embroidered MLB Batterman on the back.
The four 59FIFTY variants
The 59FIFTY name now covers a small family. New Era's silhouette guide describes each one:
- 59FIFTY Original: the classic true fitted, with a full crown and structured front.
- 59FIFTY Split Panel: a structured, medium-profile crown with a horizontal front seam for a wider logo display.
- 59FIFTY A-Frame: a five-panel design with a pinched form and a seamless front for larger logos.
- 59FIFTY Low Profile: a structured, low-profile contoured crown for a modern fit that sits lower on the head.
- 59FIFTY Retro Crown: a lightly structured, low-profile crown with a softer feel from a lightweight inner-front fabric panel.

If the Original's height is your only hesitation, the Low Profile is the obvious alternative. It keeps the exact sizing and structured front but sits lower. The Retro Crown goes further toward a vintage look, with less structure. The A-Frame matters mostly for designs with big front logos, because it has no center seam running through the graphic.

What we like
- Exact sizing. Ten listed sizes from 6 7/8 to 8 give a closer fit than one-size adjustable caps, if you measure correctly.
- Shape that holds. The structured front and full crown keep logos crisp.
- Range of designs. NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL and collaboration caps all come in this silhouette.
- A lower option exists. The Low Profile and Retro Crown variants solve the most common complaint without leaving the 59FIFTY sizing system.
What to consider
- No adjustment. If your size is off, there is no strap to fix it. New Era advises rounding up when you are between sizes.
- Tall crown. The Original's full crown is a strong look that won't suit everyone.
- Price. At $49.99 to $61.99, it costs more than many of New Era's stretch-fit caps. The 39THIRTY Stretch Fit collection we checked started at $34.99.
- No on-site ratings in our data. We did not find a ratings summary to cite, so this review doesn't rate buyer satisfaction.
Alternatives inside New Era
New Era lists the 59FIFTY next to its other silhouettes: the 9FIFTY, 9TWENTY, 9FORTY, 9SEVENTY, 19TWENTY and Casual Classic, all adjustable, and the 39THIRTY Stretch Fit. The choice usually comes down to fit system:
- Want exact size and classic shape: 59FIFTY Original.
- Want exact size but a lower cap: 59FIFTY Low Profile or Retro Crown.
- Share caps or don't know your size: an adjustable silhouette such as the 9FORTY or 9FIFTY.
- Want a closed back without exact sizing: the 39THIRTY Stretch Fit.

Caring for a 59FIFTY
A structured, flat-visor cap is easy to bend out of shape with the wrong cleaning method. Our New Era cap cleaning guide covers spot-cleaning and storage for 59FIFTY and 9FORTY caps.
Verdict
Based on New Era's own specifications and pricing, the 59FIFTY earns its flagship status as the brand's true-fitted, structured, flat-visor cap. It's the right buy if you know your exact size and like the tall classic crown. If you don't, New Era's Low Profile variant, the 39THIRTY Stretch Fit or an adjustable 9FORTY will be the safer choice.
