What this guide covers
Gap Factory sells a lot of jeans. When we checked on November 4, 2026, the women's Jeans Shop listed 211 items and the men's listed 66. Most fit problems with outlet denim come from not knowing the names, not from bad sizing. Is "Universal" a fit or a fabric? What is the difference between "slim through the hip and thigh" and "easy through the hip and thigh"? This guide walks through how Gap Factory describes fit on its product pages, how to read the size and inseam options, and how to narrow 200-plus listings down to a short list before you order.
Everything here comes from Gap Factory's own category pages, product pages and size-guide hub, checked on November 4, 2026. Stock, washes and prices change constantly at an outlet, so treat the examples as illustrations of how to read a listing, not as a promise that a particular pair will be there.

Step 1: Start with the fit tiles, not the full grid
Both Jeans Shops open with a row of fit tiles above the product grid. That row is the quickest way to cut the list down.
- Women's fit tiles: Wide Leg, Barrel, Straight, Bootcut & Flare, Curvy, Relaxed & Loose and Skinny. The page header says women's jeans are "available in sizes 24–35, short, long, petite & tall."
- Men's fit tiles: Relaxed & Baggy, Straight and Slim. The header says men's jeans are "available in sizes 28–42, including tall."
If you already know the leg shape you want, click that tile first. Then use the Filter & Sort panel. The women's grid filters by Category, Fit, Rise and Size. The men's grid filters by Category, Fit, Size and Color. Filtering by your size early saves you from falling for a pair that is only left in sizes you can't wear, which happens a lot at an outlet.
Step 2: Learn the three-line "Size & fit" code
Every Gap Factory jeans page has a "Size & fit" section. It describes the jeans in the same order each time: rise, then hip and thigh, then leg. Once you know the vocabulary, you can compare two pairs in seconds without looking at the photos.
Here is how six real listings described themselves on November 4, 2026:
| Jeans (product #) | Rise | Hip and thigh | Leg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men's GapFlex Slim Jeans (#824448) | Mid rise | Slim through the hip and thigh | Slim through the leg |
| Men's GapFlex Straight Jeans (#819249) | Mid rise | Easy through the hip and thigh | Straight leg |
| Men's Relaxed Jeans (#1178617) | Sits at the waist | Easy through the hip and thigh | Relaxed leg |
| Women's Mid Rise Universal Skinny Jeans (#733254) | Mid rise | Super skinny through the hip and thigh | Super skinny leg opening |
| Women's Curvy Mid Rise Wide-Leg Jeans (#1178882) | Mid rise | Slim through the hip, relaxed through the thigh | Wide leg |
| Women's Mid Rise '90s Slim Straight Jeans (#1178901) | Listed as "High waisted" in Size & fit, despite "Mid Rise" in the name | Slim through the hip and thigh | Straight leg |
Two practical lessons come out of that table.
First, "easy" means roomier than "slim." If you like a straight leg but find slim jeans tight across the thigh, the men's GapFlex Straight ("easy through the hip and thigh") is the more forgiving shape of the two GapFlex fits.
Second, read the Size & fit section even when the product name seems to tell you the rise. On the Mid Rise '90s Slim Straight page, the name says mid rise but the Size & fit section says "High waisted." When the name and the details disagree, look at the model photos and check the related "Shop by Rise" links before you decide. If you are between rises, it is also worth looking at the High Rise and Low Rise versions of the same '90s Slim Straight shape, which appear in the "Customers also viewed" row on that page.

Step 3: Pick your size system (women's vs men's)
The two departments size jeans differently, so it pays to know which system you are reading.
Women's: waist size plus an inseam option
Women's jeans are sold in numeric sizes. The three women's pages we checked all offered sizes 24 to 35, then a separate Inseam choice of Short, Regular or Long. The actual inseam lengths vary by style, and each product page lists them:
- Mid Rise Universal Skinny: 28" Regular, 26" Short, 30" Long.
- Mid Rise '90s Slim Straight: 31" Regular, 29" Short, 33" Long.
- Curvy Mid Rise Wide-Leg: 31" Regular, 28" Short, 33" Long.
So a "Regular" skinny is three inches shorter than a "Regular" '90s slim straight. If you know the inseam you like from a pair you already own, compare the inch figures, not the Short/Regular/Long label.
Men's: waist and length in inches
Men's jeans use waist (W) and length (L) measurements, plus a Fit option of Regular or Tall on some styles:
- GapFlex Slim: waists 26W to 42W and lengths 28L, 30L, 32L and 34L, with Regular and Tall fit options.
- GapFlex Straight: waists 28W to 42W and the same four lengths, also with Regular and Tall.
- Relaxed Jeans: waists 28W to 40W and the same four lengths, with no Tall option shown.
Above 34W the waist sizes jump in two-inch steps (36, 38, 40, 42) on all three. If you normally wear an odd size like 35, check the size guide's measurements before you choose between 34 and 36.

Step 4: Measure yourself against the size guide
Every product page has a Size Guide link next to the size buttons. The customer service hub behind it (titled "Finding Your Size") has separate fit guides for Women's Bottoms and Men's Bottoms. The page's own advice is simple. If you don't have a measuring tape, use a piece of ribbon or string and lay it against a yardstick.
A practical routine:
- Measure your natural waist and your hips at the widest point, without pulling the tape tight.
- Take your inseam from a pair you already like. Measure from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside of the leg. This is more reliable than measuring yourself.
- Compare both numbers with the women's or men's bottoms chart, then pick the inseam option (women's) or length (men's) closest to your favorite pair.
- Decide what to do between sizes based on the fabric (next step).
If you use a screen reader, the size page says to contact customer service for help with sizing. It lists chat and a toll-free number (844-437-6654 from inside the U.S.), both open daily from 7am to 1am ET.
Step 5: Check the fabric line before you size up or down
The fabric line affects fit as much as the cut does. Gap Factory states the stretch level and fiber blend on each page:
- GapFlex Slim: "Made with GapFlex stretch technology," 80% cotton, 10% polyester, 8% recycled cotton, 2% spandex.
- GapFlex Straight: GapFlex stretch, 94% cotton, 5% recycled cotton, 1% elastane.
- Men's Relaxed: "Non-stretch denim," 95% cotton, 5% recycled cotton.
- Women's Mid Rise Universal Skinny: "Stretch denim," with "a contoured waistband that forms to you," 86% cotton, 7% polyester, 5% recycled cotton, 2% elastane.
- Women's Mid Rise '90s Slim Straight: "Stretch denim," 93% cotton, 5% recycled cotton, 2% elastane.
- Women's Curvy Mid Rise Wide-Leg: "Low-stretch denim," 79% cotton, 15% recycled polyester, 5% recycled cotton, 1% elastane.
As a general rule of thumb for denim (not a Gap Factory claim), jeans with more elastane give more and may loosen with wear. Non-stretch and low-stretch denim hold their shape and feel firmer. If you are between sizes, the stretchier pairs are usually the safer ones to size down in. With non-stretch styles like the men's Relaxed, the larger size is usually the safer choice.

Step 6: Use Curvy if waistbands gap on you
If jeans that fit your hips usually gap at the back of the waist, look at the Curvy tile first. Gap Factory's curvy panel promises "no waistband gap" and "extra room in the hip and thigh," and the Curvy Mid Rise Wide-Leg page says it is "now in a curvy fit with extra room in the hip and thigh." Some Curvy styles have a Regular version: the Curvy Mid Rise Wide-Leg page says "Also available in Regular." That makes it easy to compare the two cuts in the same wash. The women's grid also showed a Curvy High Rise '90s Slim Straight on November 4, 2026.
Step 7: Read the ratings count as well as the stars
Rating counts vary widely across the grid. On November 4, 2026, the women's Mid Rise Universal Skinny showed 1,633 ratings, the men's GapFlex Straight 1,465 and the GapFlex Slim 1,413. The men's Relaxed had 72, the Mid Rise '90s Slim Straight 15 and the Curvy Mid Rise Wide-Leg just 2. A long-running style with more than a thousand ratings tells you much more about how it fits than a new style with a handful. For newer cuts, lean harder on the Size & fit text and the inseam figures.
Step 8: Plan for a return before you need one
Even with careful measuring, buying two sizes of a new cut is a common strategy. If you do that, know the return terms first. Our Gap Factory shopping guide covers the return window, refunds, shipping thresholds and how Encore membership affects shipping. The product pages we checked also offered in-store pickup, which can be handy if you want to try a pair on before taking it home.

Quick fit cheat sheet
- Want a classic, forgiving straight leg (men's)? GapFlex Straight: mid rise, easy through the hip and thigh.
- Want a close fit with stretch (men's)? GapFlex Slim: mid rise, slim through hip, thigh and leg.
- Want room and no stretch (men's)? Relaxed: sits at the waist, easy through the hip and thigh, relaxed leg.
- Want the closest fit (women's)? Universal Skinny: super skinny through the hip, thigh and leg opening, with a 28" Regular inseam.
- Want a straight leg with a longer inseam (women's)? '90s Slim Straight: 31" Regular, and Short and Long options. Check the rise wording.
- Waistbands always gap? Start in the Curvy tile.
Bottom line
Finding your fit at Gap Factory is mostly a reading exercise. Choose a fit tile, filter to your size, and read the three-line Size & fit section for rise, hip and thigh, and leg. Check the inseam in inches, then let the fabric line guide whether you size up or down. When the product name and the details disagree, as they did on one page we checked, trust the details and the photos, and keep the return policy in mind.
