Böhme and Red Dress are two of the best-known independent women's boutiques in the US that also sell heavily online. Both started in the mid-2000s, both are known for dresses, and both stock a mix of in-house designs and outside labels at similar prices. Where they really differ is in the rules: free shipping thresholds, return windows, and whether you can get your money back at all. This comparison uses only the two companies' own published shipping, returns and about pages, plus their product listings, as they read in early November 2026. It doesn't rank fabric or fit. Neither of those can be judged fairly from a spec sheet, and both vary from piece to piece at both stores.

The two companies
Böhme was founded in 2006 by Vivien and Fernanda Böhme, sisters from Rio de Janeiro, when they were 23 and 24. It sells dresses, denim, sweaters, tops and shoes online and through stores in the western US. In December 2024 Unified Commerce Group took a majority stake, and Vivien Böhme stayed on as president. Böhme says it develops its own private-label pieces, made in the USA and abroad, and also buys from outside brands.
Red Dress was founded in 2005 by Diana Best in Athens, Georgia, as a single shop on Baxter Street. It has sold online at reddress.com since 2009. The company appeared on Shark Tank in Season 6 (2014), and Mark Cuban invested. Best bought the company back in 2019 and still owns it. She also designs two lines, Prosperina and Paradisa, which Red Dress says are sold in more than 270 boutiques.
Shipping
Böhme ships free on orders of $100 or more. Orders are processed in 2–5 business days and don't move on weekends. Domestic parcels then travel via OSM Worldwide, with USPS delivering, usually within 2–9 business days. Expedited orders placed before 12pm Mountain Time ship by UPS the same day. Optional package protection is offered at checkout through Corso.
Red Dress sets its free shipping threshold higher, at $150, and only for the continental US. Below that, standard shipping costs $8.95 and Red Dress says delivery typically takes 5–8 business days from the order. Faster options are listed:
- Priority: $12.95, about 4–5 business days.
- Express: $22.95, about 2–4 business days.
- Priority and Express orders placed before 2pm ET ship the same day.
Everything ships Monday to Friday from Athens, Georgia.
What it means for you: on a typical two-dress order of $110–$140, Böhme ships free and Red Dress charges. Red Dress publishes clearer standard-shipping estimates and fixed prices for faster options. Böhme's standard timeline can stretch to about two weeks once processing and transit are added together.
Returns: the biggest difference
Böhme takes back unworn, unwashed items with tags within 21 days of fulfillment, for a refund to your original payment method, store credit or an exchange.
- Refunds: a $8.99 label fee is deducted.
- No fee: store credit (issued as a Böhme Gift Card, sometimes with bonus credit), in-store returns, and Happy Returns drop-offs where eligible.
- Final sale: clearance, items marked final sale, all jewelry and accessories, bodysuits and intimates.
- Timing: refunds are processed within 15 business days of receipt.

Red Dress gives you longer, 30 days from fulfillment, but states plainly: "We do not offer refunds to your form of payment for returned items."
- Your options: an exchange for a different size or color (no fee) or store credit.
- Store credit fee: $7.20 for handling and shipping, unless you bought Checkout+ return protection at purchase.
- Final sale: items marked final sale, and anything bought with a 30%-off discount code.
- Happy Returns: available for returns of two items or fewer.
- International orders: can't be exchanged.
What it means for you:
- If you might want your money back, Böhme is the only one of the two that refunds to your card. It costs $8.99, and you have 21 days.
- If you're fairly sure you'll keep it or swap the size, Red Dress's 30-day exchange window is longer and exchanges are free.
- If you'll take store credit either way, Böhme is cheaper (no fee) unless you bought Checkout+ at Red Dress.
Prices and what's on the racks
Both stores sell in the same price band. Böhme's new holiday party dresses listed in October 2026 range from $54.50 (Mavis Mini) to $108.50 (Melody Sequin Ultra Maxi and Lina Accordion Maxi). Its best-selling day dresses and jeans are mostly $64.50–$84.50.
On November 2, 2026, Red Dress's holiday dresses collection listed about 80 styles from $58 to $348, with a median of about $84. The higher end comes from outside designer labels it stocks. For example, its "With a Sparkle in Your Eye" black sequin V-neck midi dress is $84, while some embellished styles from other brands cost $160–$200 or more.

In style terms, Böhme's current edit leans toward polished Western-boutique looks: plaid and ribbed-knit maxis, barrel and wide-leg denim, and for the holidays polka dot sequins, accordion-pleat satin and velvet minis. Red Dress leans more romantic and glam, with satin, rhinestones, bows and lace. Both publish fabric and care details on product pages. Böhme also lists a measurement table for most dresses and jeans, which our Böhme sizing guide explains how to use.
Shopping in person
Böhme runs stores across the western US. Eligible online orders can be returned in a store with no return fee, a real advantage if you live in Utah, Idaho, Montana or Arizona. Red Dress began as a single store in Athens, Georgia, but these days it's mainly an online shop. For most shoppers outside Georgia, it means mail or Happy Returns.
Which should you choose?
Choose Böhme if:
- your order is between $100 and $150 and you want free shipping;
- you want the option of a refund to your card;
- you live near a Böhme store;
- you like measurement tables and Western-boutique styling.
Choose Red Dress if:
- you want a longer 30-day window and expect to exchange sizes rather than return for cash;
- you want fixed-price, same-day Priority or Express shipping;
- you like its more romantic, embellished holiday look or its own Prosperina and Paradisa lines.
Either way:
- check each listing for "final sale" before you pay;
- try things on the day they arrive, since both windows start at fulfillment;
- report damage quickly: 48 hours at Böhme, 3 days at Red Dress.
