Apple calls the new iPad mini with A20 Pro the biggest update in the product's history, and the spec sheet backs that up: an 8.5-inch OLED display, a much faster chip, IP67 water and dust resistance, and a thinner 5.4 mm body. Pre-orders opened on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, and the tablet arrives in stores on Friday, November 6.

The base price is $699, but the total you pay depends on storage, whether you add cellular, which Apple Pencil you choose and whether you qualify for education pricing. This guide walks through each choice. All prices and specifications are from Apple's announcement and store pages as of October 30, 2026. We have not tested the new iPad mini, so we stick to what Apple publishes and point out where you should wait for independent reviews.

What changed from the previous iPad mini

The display. The screen grows to 8.5 inches in the same footprint, thanks to bezels Apple says are 24 percent thinner. It is now an OLED Super Retina XDR panel with up to 1200 nits of peak brightness, more than twice the previous model, plus 600 nits full-screen for SDR and HDR, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 1-nit minimum for reading in the dark. A nano-texture glass option, previously reserved for iPad Pro, is available for glare.

The chip. A20 Pro uses a 2-nanometer process. Apple quotes up to 4.5 times faster AI performance, up to 2.7 times faster graphics and up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance than the previous iPad mini. Only the 512GB model gets the Dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says doubles neural processing power.

Durability. An IP67 rating means Apple tested it to a maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Apple notes that water resistance is not permanent and can decrease with normal wear, and that you should not charge a wet iPad.

Everything else. A 12MP Center Stage front camera moves to the landscape edge, which makes video calls less awkward when the iPad is in a case. The new Acoustic Display drives sound through the screen for more bass and volume. Apple's N1 chip adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, and cellular models get the C2 modem, which Apple says delivers up to 50 percent faster cellular data than the last model.

Step 1: choose storage

Apple sells 128GB, 256GB and 512GB configurations in midnight and starlight. Here is how to choose:

  • 128GB suits reading, streaming, notes, web and light games. Most apps keep files in iCloud.
  • 256GB is the sensible pick if you download films for travel, keep a large photo library on device or play big games.
  • 512GB is the only configuration with the Dual 16-core Neural Engine. If you plan to run on-device AI models or heavy creative apps, this is the model Apple designed for it.

Remember that Apple Intelligence itself needs space. Apple's support page says the system can use up to 8GB on most supported devices and up to 14GB on its newest high-memory models, and the storage used can rise temporarily during updates.

Step 2: Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular

The Wi-Fi model starts at $699 and the Wi-Fi + Cellular model at $849, a $150 difference before any carrier plan. Cellular models use eSIM, and Apple notes that not all carriers support it. Buy cellular if you use the iPad away from Wi-Fi every week, for example in a car, on a work site or as a pilot's electronic flight bag, which Apple specifically mentions. If you mostly use it at home and occasionally on trips, tethering to your phone is usually enough.

Step 3: Apple Pencil and case

The new iPad mini works with both Apple Pencil Pro ($129, or $119 with education pricing) and Apple Pencil (USB-C) ($79, or $69 with education pricing). Pencil Pro adds squeeze, barrel roll and Find My support. If you sketch or annotate seriously, Pencil Pro is worth the extra $50. For handwritten notes and the occasional markup, the USB-C model is enough.

Apple's new TechWoven Smart Folio costs $79 in navy blue or taupe. It uses a two-panel design that Apple says gives more viewing angles.

Step 4: decide how to pay

Education pricing. Eligible buyers pay $649 for the Wi-Fi model. Apple's education store is open to current and newly accepted college students and their parents, as well as faculty, staff and homeschool teachers of all grade levels.

Apple Upgrade. Apple's lease program, provided by Klarna, starts at $14.99 a month over 36 months for the Wi-Fi model and $18.21 a month for cellular. It is a lease, not a purchase or loan, so read the end-of-term terms before signing up. Our guide to buying Apple hardware for less explains how it compares with financing.

Apple Card Monthly Installments. In the US, Apple quotes $58.25 a month over 12 months at 0 percent APR for the Wi-Fi model, with 3 percent Daily Cash.

Trade-in. Apple accepts older iPads for credit toward a new one online, in the Apple Store app or in stores. Values vary by condition, year and configuration, and you must be at least the age of majority to trade in.

Protection. AppleCare+ covers accidents such as drops and spills, battery replacement service and priority support, and in some markets AppleCare One can cover several devices under one plan. On a tablet you carry everywhere, it is worth pricing before checkout rather than after.

Should you buy it, or something else?

Buy the iPad mini if you want the smallest full iPad experience for reading, note-taking, travel and one-handed use, and you value the new OLED screen and water resistance.

Consider an iPhone Duo instead if you want one device that is both your phone and a small tablet. It costs $1,999, nearly three times as much, but its inner screen is 7.6 inches. Our iPhone Duo buying guide covers who that suits.

Consider a larger iPad if you mainly type documents or edit video. An 8.5-inch screen is cramped for long typing sessions and timeline work.

Siri AI on the new iPad mini

The iPad mini ships with iPadOS 27 and supports the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, which is in beta. As of iPadOS 27.2, Siri AI works in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. It is not initially available in the EU on iPadOS, and it is not available to users under 13. Apple also says server-based features have daily usage limits. Our Siri AI language guide explains how to set it up and the Siri AI news covers the rollout.

Who the iPad mini suits best

Apple's own examples are telling: creators, small business owners, doctors, field service workers and gamers. What these users share is that they hold the device in one hand and move around. If you will mostly use it propped on a desk with a keyboard, you are paying for portability you will not use.

What to watch in reviews

When independent reviews arrive, look at three things: how the OLED panel handles reading at very low brightness, how hot the A20 Pro gets during long games, and real-world battery life. Apple did not headline a battery figure in its announcement, so treat any battery claim you read before reviews as unconfirmed.

Verdict

For most buyers, the 256GB Wi-Fi model with Apple Pencil (USB-C) is the balanced choice. Pick 512GB only if you want the extra Neural Engine for AI or creative work, and cellular only if you are regularly away from Wi-Fi. If you can use education pricing, start there, because it is the simplest saving.
