What this guide covers
Apple's autumn 2026 lineup is expensive. The new iPad mini starts at $699, the iMac with M6 at $1,499, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 and the iPhone Duo at $1,999 each, and the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display at $2,899 to $4,799.
Apple itself offers several ways to bring those prices down or spread them out: education pricing, Apple Trade In, Apple Card Monthly Installments and Apple Upgrade, its leasing program. Each has rules that change what you actually pay. This guide explains them using Apple's own pages as checked on October 30, 2026, and shows where each one fits. We cover only Apple's programs; retailer and carrier deals change often, so check them separately.

1. Education pricing
Who qualifies. Apple's US education store is available to current and newly accepted college students and their parents, as well as faculty, staff and homeschool teachers of all grade levels.
What it saves. On the new hardware:
| Product | Regular price | Education price |
|---|---|---|
| iPad mini (A20 Pro), Wi-Fi | $699 | $649 |
| iMac with M6, 10-core | $1,499 | $1,449 |
| iMac with M6, 12-core | $1,699 | $1,599 |
| MacBook Pro 14-inch, M6 | $1,999 | $1,899 |
| MacBook Pro PROLED 14-inch, M5 Pro | $2,899 | $2,749 |
| MacBook Pro PROLED 16-inch, M5 Max | $4,799 | $4,499 |
Accessories are discounted too: Apple Pencil Pro is $119 instead of $129, and Apple Pencil (USB-C) is $69 instead of $79. Apple Music's student plan costs $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and Apple's Creator Studio app bundle drops from $12.99 to $2.99 a month for students; our Creator Studio explainer has the details.
The catch. Savings are modest on cheaper products: $50 on an iPad mini, for example. On a high-end MacBook Pro they reach $300. If you qualify, it is the simplest discount there is, because it has no lease terms or trade-in conditions.
2. Apple Trade In
How it works. You get an estimate online, in the Apple Store app or in a store, and the credit comes off your new purchase. Apple says the estimate stays valid for 14 days after you receive your new device. If your trade-in is worth more than your purchase, Apple sends the balance as an Apple Gift Card. Devices with no trade-in value are recycled for free.
What it is worth. Values vary by model, condition and configuration. For the iPhone Duo launch, Apple quoted $175 to $885 in credit for an iPhone 13 or newer. Apple also accepts some non-Apple phones.
The catch. You must be at least the age of majority to trade in. If the device you send fails inspection, the credit can be reduced. Compare Apple's figure with what you could get selling privately; Apple's offer is convenient rather than the highest.
3. Apple Card Monthly Installments
In the US, Apple Card holders can pay for eligible products over time at 0 percent APR and get 3 percent Daily Cash up front. Apple's examples: the iPad mini at $58.25 a month over 12 months, and the iPhone Duo at $83.29 a month over 24 months.
The catch. You need an Apple Card, which is subject to credit approval. Taxes and shipping are charged at your card's variable APR, not 0 percent. Installments are not available at some special storefronts.
4. Apple Upgrade, the Klarna lease
Apple Upgrade is a lease, not a loan or a purchase. It is provided by Klarna and requires credit approval.
Terms. iPhone and Apple Watch leases run for 12 or 24 months; iPad and Mac leases for 24 or 36 months. Eligible products include iPhone models other than iPhone 16, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Studio, iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch Series 12.
Example prices. iPad mini from $14.99 a month over 36 months, iMac with M6 from $28.99 a month over 36 months, 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 from $38.99 a month, and iPhone Duo from $57.99 a month.
At the end. You return the device and can upgrade to a new one. If you want to keep it, Klarna charges the device's list price at lease signing, minus the payments you have made and any trade-in credit, plus tax. Apple says you will not pay more than the full price if you return the device in good condition. If you do nothing at the end of the term, the lease converts to month-to-month for up to six months, and after that you are charged the purchase-option amount.
The catches.
- Upgrading early means paying all remaining lease payments plus tax.
- The device must be in good condition when returned, and damage fees may apply.
- Insurance and AppleCare are not included. Apple says you can add AppleCare, which can help avoid damage fees.
- Klarna does not accept some card networks, such as American Express and UnionPay, or cards from some issuers, including Chase, Capital One and Citibank.
- You must be at least 18 and have a Social Security number or ITIN, plus a Klarna account.
Leasing suits people who want a new iPhone every year or two and would trade in anyway. If you keep devices for five years or more, buying outright, with education pricing or installments if you can, usually costs less.
5. AppleCare: insurance for an expensive device
AppleCare+ covers accidental damage such as drops and spills, battery replacement service and priority support. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss adds up to two theft or loss claims a year for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
AppleCare One bundles coverage for several devices. It adds theft and loss coverage for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with up to three claims a year on the Individual plan or six on the Family plan, plus surge protection. The Family plan covers eligible devices for up to six people.
When it is worth it. On a two-screen iPhone Duo or a touch-screen MacBook Pro, a single repair can cost a large share of the device's price. If you lease through Apple Upgrade, coverage also reduces the risk of damage fees at return.
Putting it together: three examples
A student buying a MacBook Pro 14 with M6. Education pricing brings it to $1,899. Add the student Creator Studio plan if you need Final Cut Pro or Logic Pro. Trade in an old laptop if Apple's offer is fair.
A family replacing an old Intel iMac. The 12-core iMac at $1,699 gives everyone Touch ID logins. Trade in the old iMac, and consider AppleCare One Family if the household has several Apple devices.
An early adopter who wants every new iPhone. Apple Upgrade on the iPhone Duo from $57.99 a month, with AppleCare added, lets you move to the next model when the lease allows. Our iPhone Duo buying guide covers storage and cases.
A checklist before you pay
- Confirm the exact configuration first. Memory on a Mac cannot be upgraded later, so decide on it before you compare payment options.
- Check whether you qualify for education pricing before you look at any other discount.
- Get a trade-in estimate and compare it with a private sale.
- If you choose Apple Upgrade, read the end-of-term and early-upgrade rules, and check that your card is accepted by Klarna.
- Decide on AppleCare at checkout, especially for an iPhone Duo or a PROLED MacBook Pro.
- Keep your receipt and order confirmation in case of a price question or a return.
