Once Upon a Farm and Serenity Kids both sell organic baby food in squeeze pouches, and both have built a following among parents who read ingredient lists. The two brands solve the shelf-life problem in opposite ways, though. Once Upon a Farm sells refrigerated pouches that must stay cold. Serenity Kids sells shelf-stable pouches that keep in a cupboard for months. That one difference shapes where you buy them, how you store them, and how they fit into a busy week.

This comparison uses each brand's own product pages, nutrition panels and store policies as they read on November 5, 2026. The closest like-for-like products are the chicken pouches, so we line those up label against label, then look at range, price, storage and ordering.

The short answer

  • Choose Once Upon a Farm if you want the widest range in one place, from first purées to smoothies, frozen meals and snacks, and you have fridge space and a grocery store nearby that stocks it.
  • Choose Serenity Kids if you want savory, low-sugar pouches built around meat and vegetables, and you need pouches that can live in a diaper bag, a car or a pantry without a cooler.

Neither choice is wrong. Many families end up using both: refrigerated pouches at home and shelf-stable ones for travel days.

The core difference: cold-pressure vs shelf-stable

Once Upon a Farm uses high-pressure processing, which it calls cold-pressure. Its product FAQ explains that HPP uses pressure, 5.52 times the pressure at the deepest part of the ocean, rather than heat to kill pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. The brand says this keeps more of the nutrients, taste and texture of the fresh ingredients. The trade-off is that the pouches are perishable and live in the refrigerated section. Our Once Upon a Farm FAQ covers the brand's guidance that a pouch can stay out of the fridge for up to 4 hours.

Serenity Kids pouches are sold shelf-stable. Its product page FAQ says unopened pouches can be eaten up to 18 months from the date of manufacture, with the best-by date printed on the back under the nutrition panel. Serenity Kids does not describe its processing method on the product page we used, so we do not characterize it here.

What this means day to day:

Once Upon a Farm Serenity Kids
Storage before opening Refrigerated Shelf-stable, up to 18 months from manufacture
Out of the fridge Up to 4 hours, per the brand's FAQ Not applicable before opening
After opening See the brand's FAQ Eat or freeze within 24 hours
Freezing Yes; thaw in the fridge, use within 24 hours, do not refreeze Yes, opened or unopened
Where it is shelved in stores Refrigerated case Regular baby food aisle

Label against label: the chicken pouches

The fairest comparison is between each brand's chicken pouch. Both are sold in the same size: a 99 g pouch, listed on the front of pack as 3.5 oz.

Per pouch (99 g) Once Upon a Farm Apple, Pineapple, Chicken & Carrot Serenity Kids Free Range Chicken with Peas & Carrots
Calories 70 80
Total fat 2 g 3 g
Sodium 10 mg 55 mg
Total carbohydrate 8 g 8 g
Fiber 1 g 3 g
Total sugars 6 g 3 g
Added sugars 0 g 0 g
Protein 4 g 5 g
Recommended age 6+ months Labeled 6+ months on pack

The ingredient lists explain the difference. Once Upon a Farm's chicken pouch is led by fruit: apple, pineapple, cooked free-range chicken, purified water, lemon juice, carrot, cilantro, extra virgin olive oil, apple cider vinegar and mint, all organic apart from the water. Serenity Kids keeps it to five ingredients: organic pea, organic carrot, organic free-range chicken, water and organic olive oil. Its FAQ points out that the sweetness comes from carrots rather than fruit.

So the Serenity Kids pouch has half the sugar, three times the fiber and a little more protein and fat. The Once Upon a Farm pouch has less sodium and a fruitier, brighter flavor profile, which some babies accept more readily when meat is new. Neither pouch has added sugar.

If low sugar and a savory palate are your main goal, Serenity Kids' meat pouches are built around that idea. If you want meat introduced alongside familiar fruit flavors, Once Upon a Farm's Meat Blends are designed that way.

Range: who sells what

Once Upon a Farm has the broader catalog by a wide margin. Its online store groups products into:

  • Baby Fruit & Veggie Blends and Simple Starters for first foods
  • Baby Oatmeal Blends
  • Meat Blends and Plant Protein pouches with 4 g or more of protein
  • Smoothies, including Oat Milk Smoothies and Smoothies with Protein & Probiotics
  • Coconut milk yogurt alternatives
  • Frozen meal starters such as Legumes, Veggies, Grains and Pasta meals
  • Refrigerated oat bars and pantry snacks, including puffs and melts

The pouch labels list certifications including USDA Organic, and many products also carry Non-GMO Project Verified and Clean Label Project Purity Award claims.

Serenity Kids is narrower and more focused. Its store lists:

  • Meat pouches with chicken, turkey, beef, bison, pork and wild-caught salmon, plus globally inspired recipes such as chicken tikka masala and beef chimichurri
  • Organic vegetable pouches, including sweet potato and parsnip, squash, and carrot blends, made with organic olive oil
  • Dairy-free smoothies
  • Grain-free puffs
  • A2 whole milk toddler formula

Serenity Kids' product tags describe pouches as free of common allergens such as dairy, egg, gluten and soy, and its Sweet Potato & Parsnip veggie pouch is marketed with 5 g of healthy fat per serving.

Ordering and shipping

The shipping rules differ more than the prices, because cold food is harder to ship.

Once Upon a Farm, according to its terms of sale:

  • Refrigerated and frozen products ship by 2-day delivery to the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC only.
  • No shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, US territories or PO Boxes.
  • No weekend deliveries.
  • Subscription boxes of 16 or 24 items can renew every 1 to 5 weeks.
  • All sales are final, with case-by-case remedies for damaged or warm deliveries.

Our Once Upon a Farm shopping guide walks through the subscription cutoffs and the damage claim process in detail.

Serenity Kids, according to its shipping policy:

  • Free shipping on US orders over $65; a flat $8 below that.
  • Some orders ship from Amazon warehouses and arrive in 3 to 5 business days; others process in 24 to 48 hours, then take 4 to 6 business days on average.
  • Ships to PO Boxes, Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands and APO/FPO addresses via USPS, allowing 10 to 12 business days.
  • No international shipping.
  • Subscriptions can deliver every 1, 2 or 3 months.
  • A "Serenity Guarantee" invites customers who are not satisfied with the food to contact the company, but it excludes shipping delays, ordering errors and retail purchases, and orders cannot be refunded after 180 days.

For families outside the contiguous US, Serenity Kids is the only one of the two that can ship direct.

Safety notes

Once Upon a Farm is currently recalling all lots of its Tractor Wheels Organic Toddler Soft-Baked Bars because of a potential choking hazard for toddlers. The recall covers those bars only, not the pouches compared here. If you have Tractor Wheels at home, see our Tractor Wheels recall guide for UPCs and refund steps.

For any pouch, both brands' guidance is to check with your pediatrician on when to start solids and which foods to introduce. Serenity Kids also suggests introducing single ingredients one at a time if there is a family history of food sensitivities.

Which should you buy?

Once Upon a Farm is the better fit if:

  • You want one brand to cover first foods, smoothies, frozen meals and snacks
  • Your baby prefers fruit-forward flavors
  • You shop at a grocery store with a refrigerated baby section, or you live in the contiguous US and can take weekday deliveries
  • You have fridge space for a 16- or 24-pouch box

Serenity Kids is the better fit if:

  • Lower sugar and savory, meat-forward meals are your priority
  • You need pouches that travel without a cooler
  • You live in Alaska, Hawaii, a US territory or use a PO Box or military address
  • You want a shelf-stable stash for daycare, car trips or emergencies

Bottom line

The decision comes down to cold versus convenience. Once Upon a Farm's refrigerated pouches offer a much wider menu and fruit-led recipes, at the cost of fridge space and a short time out of the cold. Serenity Kids' shelf-stable pouches are narrower, more savory and lower in sugar per pouch, and they can sit in a cupboard for up to 18 months. On the chicken pouches we compared, Serenity Kids has more protein and fiber and less sugar, while Once Upon a Farm has less sodium and costs a little more per pouch direct.
