Shop for kids' pajamas at The Children's Place and you will see two kinds of product descriptions. Some sets are "Snug Fit Cotton." Others are fleece, microfleece or velour with no fit callout at all. The difference is not just about softness. It reflects a US federal safety rule for children's sleepwear, and it should shape both what you buy and what size you pick.

This guide explains that rule in plain terms. It then shows how The Children's Place labels each pajama type on its own product pages, and how to choose between them for your child. It is a research-based guide: product details come from The Children's Place US site and the safety rules come from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Sources are listed in the References at the end.

The rule behind "snug fit": why kids' pajamas are different

In the US, children's sleepwear has its own flammability standards. The CPSC enforces them under the Flammable Fabrics Act: 16 C.F.R. part 1615 covers sizes 0 through 6X, and part 1616 covers sizes 7 through 14. The CPSC says the standards were designed to protect young children from small open-flame sources "such as matches, lighters, candles, fireplace embers, stoves, and space heaters."

In practice, children's pajamas in those sizes usually fall into one of two groups:

  1. Flame-resistant sleepwear. The fabric and the finished garment must pass the sleepwear flammability tests. Loose fits such as nightgowns, robes and roomy fleece sets belong here.
  2. Tight-fitting sleepwear. Garments that meet specific "tight-fitting" size, measurement and labeling requirements are exempt from those sleepwear flammability tests. They must still meet the general clothing flammability standard. The required label itself explains the logic: a loose-fitting garment is more likely to catch fire. This is where cotton pajamas usually fall.

The CPSC also exempts "infant garments," defined as sized 9 months or smaller and under set length limits. Garments that meet that definition fall outside the sleepwear flammability tests, which is why the rules for newborn sizes differ from toddler sizes.

The yellow hangtag

Tight-fitting sleepwear must carry a prominent yellow hangtag with black text that reads: "For child's safety, garment should fit snugly. This garment is not flame resistant. Loose-fitting garment is more likely to catch fire." When the CPSC introduced the labeling requirement in 2000, it also described a permanent label sewn into the neck reading "Wear snug-fitting. Not flame resistant."

The CPSC's advice to parents is simple: look for tags that say the garment is flame-resistant or snug-fitting.

How The Children's Place labels its pajamas

The Children's Place prints a safety note in the product description of each pajama listing. The wording tells you exactly which group a set belongs to. Here is what we found on its US product pages at the time of writing.

Pajama type (example) Fabric listed Safety note on the product page List price
Snug Fit Cotton two-piece (Boys Dino) 100% rib-knit cotton "Garment should fit snugly. This garment is not flame resistant." $29.95
Dream Fleece two-piece (Girls Embroidered Dream Mode) Polyester fleece top, polyester microfleece pants "This garment is flame resistant." $39.95
Velour two-piece (Girls Hot Cocoa) 95% polyester / 5% spandex velour "This garment is flame resistant." $32.95
Cozy Fleece one-piece (Boys Camo, hooded) Polyester fleece body, microfleece hood lining "This garment is flame resistant." $39.95
Cotton top + Dream Fleece pants (Kids Cousin Crew) Rib-knit cotton top, polyester microfleece pants "Pajama top is snug fitting & pajama pants are flame resistant." $32.95
Dream Fleece footed one-piece (Baby and Toddler Girls Bow) Polyester and recycled polyester microfleece "This garment is flame resistant." $19.95

List prices are the "original" prices shown on each page. The site often shows lower sale prices, and both change frequently.

The pattern is consistent: cotton sets are snug fit, and polyester fleece, microfleece and velour sets are flame resistant. The mixed "Cousin Crew" set shows how precise the labels can be. Its cotton top is the snug-fitting part, and its fleece pants are the flame-resistant part.

Snug Fit Cotton: who it suits

The Children's Place Snug Fit Cotton sets are listed as 100% rib-knit cotton, with crew necks, long sleeves with banded cuffs and pull-on elasticized waistbands. The Dino set's description says the fabric keeps "bedtime cool."

Snug-fit cotton makes sense if:

  • Your child sleeps warm or your home is heated.
  • You prefer natural fibers next to the skin.
  • Your child is comfortable in a close fit. The fit is close by design.

The sizing catch: with snug-fit cotton, do not size up for growing room. The hangtag text explains why. A loose cotton pajama has lost the property that makes it acceptable without flame-resistance testing. If your child is between sizes, consider a flame-resistant fleece set instead of a roomier cotton one. If a cotton set becomes loose after washing or wear, treat it as daywear or loungewear rather than sleepwear.

Fleece, microfleece and velour: who they suit

The Children's Place's polyester sleepwear is labeled flame resistant, so it does not have to fit snugly. Examples include Dream Fleece, Cozy Fleece and velour. Product details from the pages we checked include:

  • Dream Fleece two-piece: a polyester fleece top with polyester microfleece pants. The description calls the pants "side-brushed for softness & anti-pilling."
  • Velour two-piece: 95% polyester and 5% spandex velour with a "soft hand feel."
  • Cozy Fleece one-piece: a hooded, zip-front fleece one-piece with banded sleeve and leg cuffs and a brushed microfleece hood lining.

Flame-resistant fleece or velour makes sense if:

  • Your home runs cold at night, or your child kicks off blankets.
  • Your child dislikes a tight fit.
  • You want a little room to grow, within reason. A flame-resistant set does not depend on fit for its safety exception, but any pajama that is far too big can still be a tripping hazard.

Footed fleece one-pieces for babies and toddlers

For the youngest sleepers, The Children's Place sells footed one-pieces in both fabric types. The Baby and Toddler Girls Bow Dream Fleece Footed One-Piece we checked has:

  • A two-way zip front "for easy changing."
  • Attached footies with elasticized back ankles.
  • No-slip gripper soles from size 6–9M and up.
  • A side-brushed, anti-pilling finish, according to the description.

Snug Fit Cotton footed one-pieces are also listed in baby sizes, for example in the matching-family gingerbread print. The same snug-fit principle applies once your child is past the infant-garment exemption, which covers 9 months and under.

Mixed sets and matching family pajamas

Holiday and matching-family collections often mix fabrics, such as a cotton graphic top with fleece pants. Read the safety note for each piece. In the "Cousin Crew" set, the top must fit snugly while the pants are flame resistant. If you size up the whole set so the pants are roomier, the cotton top may no longer fit snugly.

Sizing: using The Children's Place size ranges

The site groups pajamas into Girl and Boy (sizes 4–18), Toddler Girl and Toddler Boy (6M–5T) and Baby (0–24M). Big-kid sets are sold by letter with a number, for example XS (4), S (5/6), M (7/8), L (10/12), XL (14) and XXL (16) on the Dream Fleece set we checked. Each product page links to a size guide. For measurements and how the ranges map across ages, see our Children's Place size chart guide.

A practical approach:

  • Snug Fit Cotton: buy your child's true size, measured by chest, waist and height, not a size up.
  • Flame-resistant fleece or velour: true size, or the next size only if your child is at the top of the range.
  • Footed one-pieces: check the length. Feet that are too short are uncomfortable, and footies that are too long can be slippery even with grippers.

Quick label checklist

  1. Find the safety note in the product description, or the yellow hangtag in a store.
  2. "Should fit snugly … not flame resistant" means buy the true size and keep it snug.
  3. "This garment is flame resistant" means the fit can be looser.
  4. Mixed sets: check each piece.
  5. Retire cotton pajamas from sleep once they no longer fit snugly.
