Best formal maxi: Melody Sequin Ultra Maxi Dress ($108.50)

The Melody is the most dramatic dress in the drop. It has a round neck, long sleeves, a sequin bodice and an ivory-and-black polka dot print that runs down to an "ultra maxi" length. It's fully lined, made of non-stretch polyester with spandex, and dry clean only, the one piece on this list that needs it.

Sizing: the length runs from 56" in XS to 58" in XL, so on most people it will reach the floor. Wear it with heels or have it hemmed. The fabric doesn't stretch, so compare the bust column with your own measurement plus some room. Size Small lists a 34" bust and Medium a 36". Böhme tags the Melody for wedding guests as well as holiday parties, so it can work for a winter wedding too.

Best statement color: Lina Accordion Maxi Dress ($108.50)

The Lina comes in red and hunter green. Both are strapless satin with an accordion-pleated skirt, a matching neck scarf and a corset tie at the back. The tie lets you adjust the fit through the bodice, which helps since the satin doesn't stretch. Care is hand wash cold and line dry.

The Max is a silver sequin column with adjustable spaghetti straps, a neck-scarf detail and a side zipper. It's the most obviously "midnight countdown" dress here. Unlike most sequin dresses, it's described as stretchy: the self fabric is 95% polyester and 5% spandex, and the lining has spandex too. Best long-sleeve option: Danna Ruched Maxi in Red-Brown ($98.50)

Listed at the end of September, ahead of the main drop, the Danna is the quietest dress here and the easiest to wear again. It's a V-neck, long-sleeve maxi with a ruched bodice and a drop waist, made of 97% lyocell and 3% spandex. Wear it with boots for a work party, or with heels and gold jewelry for a dinner. It's partially lined and hand wash only.

The Scotty went live on October 19. It's a sleeveless navy satin mini with a round neck and a lace-trimmed hem, the lingerie-inspired look that's everywhere this season. It's fully lined with a back zipper. The satin is non-stretch, so check the bust and waist before you order. Care is hand wash cold and hang to dry.

Style it: navy works with silver or gold. Add sheer black tights and a long coat for a December evening.

Best velvet: Delphine Lace Mini Dress ($58.50)

Despite the name, the Delphine is mostly velvet. It's a sleeveless burgundy mini with a polka dot pattern, a round neck and lace trim. The velvet is stretchy (95% polyester, 5% spandex) and fully lined, with a back zipper and hook and eye. When we checked, XS and XL were already sold out and S to L were left.

Best budget pick: Mavis Mini Dress in Black ($54.50)

The Mavis is the least expensive dress in the drop and one of the most versatile. It's a black polka dot mini with an asymmetrical neckline, long sleeves, a ruched bodice and a ruffled hem. It's stretchy and fully lined, and can be hand washed cold and line dried. Long sleeves make it practical for winter, and on its own it's a good fit for a friends' party or a holiday dinner.

• Matie Mixed Media Maxi Dress in Navy ($64.50): a ribbed sweater top joined to a satin maxi skirt. It's comfortable on top and dressy below. It went live on October 23, and only size L was left when we checked.

How to choose between them

Start with the dress code and the weather. For a black-tie event or a winter wedding, the Melody or the Lina gives you a full-length, formal shape. For a countdown party where you'll be standing and dancing, the stretchy Max is more forgiving than non-stretch satin. If you want something you'll wear again in January, the Danna and the Mavis are the most versatile. Both have long sleeves and quieter colors. Finally, think about care. If you don't want a dry-cleaning bill, skip the Melody and choose one of the hand-wash styles.
